Awhile back, John-Paul Palescandolo, one of this site’s contributors went on a tour of some abandoned subway sections of New York City.  Becoming a member of New York Transit Museum is a great opportunity for those who have further interest in this area of history.

John-Paul ended up with a wonderful original capture of the main archway of the Old City Hall station stop, with all of the vibrantly-colored tilework, except for one problem – there was a wooden ramp in view, something that he had no control over.  Well, he did what any good photographer would do, which is try to get the best possible shot anyway.

Difficult lighting situation here – Canon EOS 5D using the Canon 24/1.4L @ ISO 400.  Image was captured hand-held at about 1/15 sec.
After the RAW processing, we come away with an image that is technically quite good.  Here you are:

This past weekend Kaz Arts client and CCM photography major Melanie Ruskin from Chatham, New Jersey came to our home studio. The task at hand for the day?  We printed, mounted and framed the photographs for her upcoming exhibit at Cafe Beethoven – Main St, Chatham, NJ.

Melanie’s work is both unique and powerful for a woman of her age.  She takes common everyday objects and places them into unusual situations and shows us a different way of looking at things.  The mood and color of her work is vibrant and high in contrast which grabs the attention of the viewer.  Only a year ago, photography was nothing but a fun hobby for her, but now she has chosen it as a career path and progressing quite well with her studies.  To see more of Melanie’s work you can visit her Flickr page.

Join us for the opening of her exhibit  – Saturday March 6 @ 7pm
Cafe Beethoven  262  Main St  Chatham, NJ

This month’s client photo gallery features work from Michael Paxton of Basking Ridge, New Jersey.  These are photographs from Michael’s two recent trips to Dominica – enjoy!  All images copyright Michael Paxton 2009.

Dominica styles itself as ‘The Nature Island of the Caribbean’.  A rugged, volcanic island to the north of Martinique, it’s known more for its rain-forest, rivers and waterfalls than its beaches. These photos were taken on Dominica’s windward side and give some indication of the beautiful light available to the photographer as the day progresses from dawn through to a moonlit night.  As always a huge thanks to Eric for his guidance on the use of Vari-ND filters and all of the cumulative advice that continues to improve my photography.
